About Me

My name is Elizabeth Ballou, I’m twenty and a college student, and I write a lot.

Lately a lot of people have been asking to read my work (which is wonderful of you all to ask!).  So I figured I’d consolidate everything that I have the rights to post online.  ‘Letters of Mist’ is my web portfolio, filled with fiction, poetry, essays, and whatever inane musings I happen to have about literature.  If you have any comments or constructive criticism…please, I’d love to hear from you.

A brief bio: I was born and raised and have lived my whole life in the delicious, history-laden, and Southern city of Richmond, VA.  (Anyone who says that Richmond is not that Southern has clearly never been here.)  I like creating things.  Other than writing, I act, play the flute, and sew very badly.  My favorite book is Gregory Maguire’s Wicked.  My favorite poet is Federico García Lorca.  My favorite city is Siena, Italy.  My work has appeared or is forthcoming in {tap}, the Global Journal Project, Scholars and Rogues, Polyphony H.S.,  the Adroit Journal, Crashtest, Spry, Prick of the Spindle, and Crack the Spine, among others, and I have done readings at the 2013 New York City Poetry Festival and the 2010 national Scholastic ceremony.  I have won awards for three years running from the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, including gold medals, the New York Life Award for fiction, a silver medal with distinction scholarship for my senior portfolio, and second place nationally for my novella, Cathedral Tales.  Various pieces have also won awards from the Rider University poetry contest, the Claremont Review poetry contest, and the Adroit Journal fiction contest.  I am also a fiction editor at the Adroit Journal, which publishes the work of both adult and youth writers.  (If you’re interested in this sort of thing, I highly encourage you to submit there.)  Last, I’ve recently started teaching creative writing to pre-teens and teens, so if you live in or around Richmond, ask me about my workshops or my one-on-one sessions.

Your Dad sent me to your blog. Great stuff, including the piece on Sexual Harrassment. It’s not just universities, sadly, it’s pervasive in our society which is better than some others, where it is much worse. Also loved your pic in the Cavalier Daily. Keep on writing!

I will indeed keep on writing! Thanks so much for stopping by to read my work. And yes, unfortunately sexual harassment is a universal issue – but I hope that the more aware of it we are as a society, the less pervasive it becomes!
